FAQ's

(Because you’re not the first to ask… and definitely won’t be the last)

Whether it’s your dog’s first holiday or your cat is a seasoned staycation pro, we know you’ll have questions. Here’s everything you need to know about staying at Bell Reed Kennels & Cattery. If you’re still unsure, just shout — we love a chat almost as much as we love your pets.

Is Bell Reed safe and secure?

Extremely.

There is always someone on site, day and night. We have electric gates, CCTV throughout the premises, and clear routines in place to keep everyone safe and accounted for at all times.

Who will be looking after my pet?

A team who are trained, qualified and genuinely animal-obsessed.

All staff complete full in-house training to current standards. Everyone is pet first aid trained, and the majority of our team also hold animal care and behaviour qualifications, including Level 3 (or equivalent Ofqual Level 3) in Animal Management.

At all times, there is at least one person on site holding the highest level qualification.

Are you insured and registered with a vet?

Yes and yes.

We’re fully insured and registered with Henley House Vets.

What vaccinations are required?

All pets must be:

✔ Fully up to date with annual vaccinations

✔ Dogs must also be vaccinated against kennel cough

No exceptions — it keeps everyone healthy.

Is there an age limit?

No.

As long as your pet is fully vaccinated, they’re welcome — youngsters, seniors and everyone in between.

What if my dog is nervous, reactive or not keen on others?

That’s absolutely fine.

We welcome nervous and reactive dogs and have specific procedures in place to ensure they feel settled and do not come into contact with other dogs.

For first-time boarders or anxious dogs, we recommend day care as a trial, helping them become familiar with the team, routine and environment.

Will my dog be socialised?

If you’d like them to be — yes.

Dogs are grouped carefully by size, age, temperament, play style and breed to keep playtime safe, fun and stress-free.

What about cats — will they hear the dogs?

No — peace and quiet guaranteed.

Our cattery is fully sound-proofed and completely separate from the kennels, creating a calm, relaxing environment for our feline guests (exactly how they like it).

How much exercise will my dog get?

Plenty — with variety to keep things interesting.

We have a range of secure outdoor exercise areas, including our Bark Park, Agility area, and Scent ’N’ Sniff zone for all that important nose work. Dogs enjoy a minimum of four exercise sessions per day, each lasting 20–30 minutes, tailored to their age, energy level and individual needs.

Plenty of fresh air, movement and enrichment — without overdoing it 🐾

What about mental stimulation and enrichment?

We don’t just exercise bodies — we work those brains too.

Throughout the day (and especially on rainy days), dogs enjoy a variety of enrichment activities designed to keep minds busy and tails wagging.

This includes things like:

  • Puzzle toys

  • Lick mats

  • Kongs

  • Snuffle mats

  • Roolo toys and other interactive games

Enrichment is tailored to each dog, helping reduce boredom, build confidence and encourage calm, happy behaviour during their stay.

Because a tired brain is just as important as tired legs 🧠🐾

Is it warm and cosy?

Very.

  • Dogs: Heated blocks from 1st October – 31st March

  • Cats: Heated cattery plus individual heated pods in every pen

What food do you provide?

Food is included in the price.

  • Dogs receive our dry dog food

  • Cats receive our dry cat kibble

Prefer to bring your own? No problem at all. We have fridges, freezers and storage in every block.

👉 We recommend puppies and dogs on specific diets remain on their own food.

What should I bring with my pet?

Honestly — not much at all. We have everything your pet needs here, from comfy beds and cosy blankets to toys and bowls. You’re very welcome to bring one or two familiar items, such as a bed, blanket, favourite toy, or something that smells like home (or you). Familiar scents can be incredibly comforting.

We do recommend keeping it minimal though — too many items can be overwhelming, especially in a new environment. A little bit of home goes a long way

Can you give medication?

Yes.

Our team carry out daily health checks and are trained to administer medication and supplements.

Medication must be clearly labelled and supplied in the correct containers. A small surcharge applies.

Do you offer grooming?

We do!

Grooming is available during your pet’s stay through Mucky Pups Parlour, perfect if you’d like to collect a clean, fresh-smelling pet instead of a muddy one.

Grooming is by appointment only and must be booked in advance.

Do you offer training during boarding?

Yes — and it’s a popular option.

Training can be added on during your pet’s stay through Sussex K9 Academy, ideal for working on obedience, confidence or specific behavioural challenges while they’re here.

Are there any additional extras?

There are!

We offer a range of optional extras to tailor your pet’s stay, including:

  • Training sessions

  • Grooming

  • 1-2-1 time with a member of staff

  • Additional enrichment and activities

Just let us know what your pet needs — we’re happy to help customise their stay.
